Enrol members at the terminal
When no member is found, sign the customer up on the terminal, or link the card to the membership they already have.
When CardAcquisition finds no member, that doesn't always mean the customer isn't one. The card may just not be linked yet. Offer the customer a choice:
- Become a member: sign up on the terminal.
- Link this card to my membership: the customer is a member with another card.
- Continue without: go straight to the payment.

L->>A: Add the member number to the identity
- After the card acquisition, send an Input request. The terminal shows the terms and asks for the mobile number.
- Read the mobile number in the Input response.
- Continue with the Payment, using the same card acquisition, so the customer doesn't tap again. Or abort with EnableService.
- Send the mobile number and the card reference to your loyalty program.
- Your loyalty program creates a temporary identity at Aera and texts the customer a sign-up link.
- When the customer has signed up, your loyalty program adds the member number to the identity. See Complete a temporary identity.
Next time the customer pays with that card, they are recognised.
What the POS must keep
Keep these together until your loyalty program has them:
| Data | From |
|---|---|
| Your transaction ID | SaleTransactionID |
| Aera's transaction ID and time | POITransactionID in the CardAcquisition response |
| Mobile number | Input response |
| Masked card number and card reference | CardAcquisition response |
Never store card numbers unencryptedDon't log or store full card numbers. When your loyalty program sends a card to Aera, the card number must be encrypted. See Encrypt card data.
Link a card to an existing member
- The customer chooses Link this card to my membership and gives their mobile number.
- Your loyalty program finds the member, and the matching identity at Aera.
- Your loyalty program adds the new card to that identity. See Add a new card.
- Continue with the payment.
This works when the mobile number is already on the identity.
If the customer stops
- Declines the terms: no sign-up. Continue with the payment without membership.
- Stops before the number is entered: handle the abort, and send EnableService with
AbortTransactionif no payment follows, so the terminal is free. - Never finishes signing up: the identity stays temporary. At checkout the card isn't recognised as a member.
