Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)

Let customers with foreign cards pay in their own currency. When to use DCC, what the customer sees, how it affects your store, and how to turn it on.

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) lets a customer with a card from another country pay in their own currency instead of yours. The terminal offers the choice. The customer decides.

When to use DCC

DCC is useful if many of your customers pay with cards from abroad, for example in tourist areas, at airports or in hotels. If nearly all your customers use domestic cards, you don't need it.

You set a minimum amount. Purchases below it are paid in your currency without the extra screen.

How it works

  1. The customer taps, inserts or swipes their card.
  2. The terminal checks if the payment can use DCC: DCC is turned on for the terminal, the amount is at or above your minimum, and the card is eligible.
  3. If it can, the terminal shows Select currency, with the amount in both currencies, the exchange rate and the mark-up over the European Central Bank (ECB) rate.
  4. The customer chooses a currency on the screen or with the keys shown, for example 1 for EUR or 3 for NOK.
  5. The payment continues as normal. The receipt shows the DCC details.

If the payment can't use DCC, the customer doesn't see the screen and pays in your currency.

Terminal screen "Select currency": EUR €50.00 or 526,05 NOK, 1 EUR = 10.521635 NOK, mark-up 2.89% over ECB rate

Example: a store that prices in euro. The customer has a Norwegian card. They can pay €50.00, and their bank converts the amount. Or they can pay 526,05 NOK, a fixed amount in their own currency at the rate shown.
